Court blocks Tampa judge’s order lifting CDC virus rules on cruise ships

Pandemic restrictions on Florida-based cruise ships will remain in place after a federal appeals court temporarily blocked a previous ruling that sided with a Florida lawsuit challenging the regulations.

The one-paragraph decision by a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was filed at 11:50 p.m. Saturday, just minutes before a Tampa judge’s previous ruling on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention restrictions was set to take effect.

Canada lifting cruise ban on Nov. 1

Canada plans to reopen its waters to cruise ships on Nov. 1.

The date effectively means that cruising won't begin in Canada until spring 2022 since the summer Alaska season and the summer/fall Atlantic Canada season will be over by November.

Which Cruise Lines Require a COVID-19 Vaccine?

As the cruise industry seeks to resume operations around the world, more and more lines are introducing mandates that require some, or all, passengers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

But not all cruise lines have the same policies and cruise requirements vary from port to port, ship to ship, itinerary to itinerary, country to country and state to state.

Cruise Lines Modify Vaccination Policies to Prohibit Vaccine Mixing

There are caveats, as each line is releasing slightly different policies.


Coronavirus: Royal Caribbean delays Hong Kong ‘cruise to nowhere’ voyage until October 5 over Covid-19 rules

Royal Caribbean Cruises’ Spectrum of the Seas – Asia’s largest and newest vessel – was supposed to depart at the end of July, but had to adjust its plans to allow crew members to meet vaccination and quarantine requirements set by the Hong Kong government.

“The whole cruise resumption preparation is a lengthy process, including quarantine and vaccinations for all crew members,” a spokeswoman for the operator told the Post.

Summary of Recent Changes

Added language that cruise ship operators must have a protocol for managing persons with COVID-19 and close contacts who are not fully vaccinated at all foreign ports of call.

Following a committee meeting, WHO released a statement that expressed concerns about highly transmissible coronavirus strains like the delta variant and concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic remains a public health emergency of international concern.
