First Date Announced for US Cruises as European Ships Have New Scares
"Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, an operator of short cruises between Florida and the Bahamas, once again has become the first US-based cruise line to announce a date for the resumption of cruises. The company had set previous dates for a return to service, but with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) no sail order still in place, the company announced it is now targeting December 18, 2020 for its first cruise. According to the CEO of the company, Oneil Khosa, the company will resume sailings to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island with two-night cruises departing from West Palm Beach, Florida. The company has been adjusting its return to service dates from June to July, September, and November based on the CDC’s extensions of the no sail order and conditions related to the pandemic."
The Rule Change That Could Save Alaska’s 2021 Cruise Season
"More than 1.3 million expected cruise ship passengers did not arrive in Alaska in 2020 due to the industry-wide shutdown that began in March and largely continues to this day. What was ramping up to be another sold-out season for one of the world’s most desirable cruise destinations turned into a lost year. Don Young, the U.S. Representative for Alaska’s at-large congressional district since 1973, doesn’t want to see the situation repeated in 2021. But there’s an obstacle. Under 100-year-old U.S. legislation, large, foreign-flagged cruise ships departing from the West Coast of the U.S. — which is basically all of them — must stop at a Canadian port before sailing to Alaska. The issue: Canada continues to enforce border closures with the U.S. and ban large cruise ships from its ports, and there’s no indication on when that will change."
P&O Australia Expecting 'Rebound' of Local Cruise Industry
"P&O Cruises Australia earlier this week announced the next stage of its fleet transformation with both the Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter (ahead of schedule), arriving in the first half of 2021 in a mark of confidence in the expected rebound of the local cruise industry, according to the company. The ships are the currented Golden and Star Princess. The Pacific Adventure will begin sailing from Sydney on April 30 next year and the delivery of Pacific Encounter is being brought forward by at least six months to ensure the local fleet is poised to drive the resurgence of cruising at the right time, the company said. The Pacific Encounter is scheduled to call Brisbane home from May 7, 2021 – but additional voyages may be added even earlier, depending on the timing of the return of cruising in Australia."
Canary Islands Opens Ports to TUI and Hapag for Cruises
"The Canary Islands is the newest destination to announce that it is reopening its ports to cruise ships. The government’s decision to reopen its ports is part of the country’s effort to begin to restore the tourism industry. The Government of the Canary Islands has authorized cruises to begin sailing between the ports as of November 5, provided that the companies committed to a strict sanitary protocol established by the departments of Health, Public Works, Transport and Housing as a precaution for both tourists and residents. Among the conditions that the cruise lines will have to meet is providing insurance in case of an outbreak of COVID-19 among the passengers as well as establishing agreements with local hospitals and hotels on each island in case a quarantine is required. To date, the Canary Islands have approved two cruise lines, TUI Cruises and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises both from Germany to begin cruising."
Will cruise ships return to Venice?
" "Work! Work! Work!" shout the baggage handlers, ship cleaners and port security guards protesting on the steps of Venice's Santa Lucia train station. The protest formed quickly and without warning - a flash mob, designed to call urgent attention to the 6,000 Venetians who rely on the cruise industry for work. After 15 minutes they are gone. This year, international travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus are forcing cruise companies to delay most tours until 2021. That meant the ships that usually tower high above Venice's historic bell towers and basilicas have been noticeably absent. Environmental campaigners have welcomed the change. They've been calling for cruise ships to be banned from Venice for years because of concerns about pollution and continual damage to the fragile foundations of the city. Traditionally known as La Serenissima, Venice is no longer "'the most serene" but rather one of the most polluted ports in Europe, according to the green campaign group Transport and Environment. Supporters of the cruise industry say the Italian government in Rome must now come up with a long-term plan - such as a new cruise terminal, outside the Venice lagoon - that will protect the city, but also guarantee the ships' future in the area."
Helsinki Shipyard Receives One of the Few 2020 New Cruise Ship Orders
"In what is likely to be one of only a few new cruise ship orders placed in 2020, Helsinki Shipyard Oy announced it has entered into a contractual agreement with the start-up expedition cruise line Swan Hellenic for a luxury expedition cruise ship. The order comes as a follow up to a previous order for two cruise ships that the new line placed with the shipyard earlier in 2020. The third vessel ordered by Swan Hellenic, like the two vessels already in the orderbook, represents according to Helsinki Yard a new generation of expedition cruise vessels. Each of the ships is designed for the global cruise market, with an emphasis on high-latitude cruises. The third order, however, is for a slightly larger vessel than the two Swan Hellenic previously contracted for with the shipyard. With an overall length of 410 feet, the third vessel is longer than the previous two orders which are for 377-foot vessels. The gross tonnage of the third ship increases to 12,000 versus 10,500 gross tons for the previous orders. The passenger capacity also increases from 152 to 192 passengers in 96 cabins and suites. The first two exploration cruise ships will have a crew of 120 while the third will be manned by 140 in crew. Each of the cruise ships will have an ice-strengthened hull designed for exploration and polar cruising with the first two designed for year-round polar cruising with a P5 rating while the third cruise ship is for more globular operations with the lower P6 classification. All three of the vessels will be powered by a 4,6-megawatt diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system with selective catalytic reduction and a 3-megawatt maximum battery package."
A Cruise Ship History: Albatros
"Another victim of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Albatros was retired by Phoenix Reisen. After enjoying a 15-year career with the German tour operator, the 1973-built vessel was sold to a new operator. It is now set for a new life as a hotel ship in the Middle East. One of the three original Royal Viking Line vessels, the Albatros has also spent time sailing for Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Cruise Line and more…"

Swan Hellenic orders 12,000 gross ton expedition ship at Helsinki Shipyard
"Swan Hellenic, the UK based expedition cruise operator, and Helsinki Shipyard in Finland announced that the cruise company has contracted a 12,000 gross ton Vega class that is due for delivery at the end of 2022. The now contracted vessel will have a length of 125 metres and it will be able to accommodate 192 passengers. This means it will be slightly larger than the previous two ships, which will be of 10,700 gross tons, 110 metres in length and offer 148 berths. The latest vessel will have PC6 ice class and it will have a crew of 140."
MSC Magnifica resumes operations in Italy
"MSC Magnifica has departed Genoa, Italy and become the second ship to resume sailing for MSC Cruises following the enforced halt to operations caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The ship has begun a 10-night voyage in the Mediterranean Sea, with calls planned in Italy, Greece and Malta before returning to Genoa. She will sail six Mediterranean cruises before the end of the year, including an eight-night Christmas voyage departing on 18 December. The vessel will implement the health and safety protocol first introduced in August onboard MSC Grandiosa. These measures include universal testing for guests and crew, enhanced sanitation and cleaning procedures, required wearing of face masks and a reduced passenger capacity to enable social distancing. Guests will be able to leave the ship for distanced shore excursions, including tours of Athens, Greece, and Rome, Italy, and visits to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the original venue of the Olympic Games."
Taiwan's first round-island cruise ship Explorer Dream docks in Kaohsiung
"Taiwan's first round-island cruise ship docked in Port Kaohsiung on Friday, October 23, on a 4-day voyage launched as part of the efforts to boost domestic travel amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Genting Cruise Lines' vessel Explorer Dream embarked the previous day from Keelung, Taiwan, taking nearly 1200 passengers to Kaohsiung and Hualien in the east. The cruise is among the latest packages from the line to operate domestic tourism in Taiwan due to COVID, the first taking the form of island-hopping itineraries from Keelung to islands like Kinmen, Penghu, and Matsu from July."

Costa Driving Demand in China for 2021
“There is potential everywhere. We are still at a very early stage of the development of the cruise industry in China,” said Mario Zanetti, chief commercial officer of Costa Cruises and president of Costa Group Asia.
The line’s 2021 deployment is seeing a mix up. The Costa Venezia will trade Shanghai for Tianjin, as the brand targets driving demand in the north with a new ship. The Costa Serena will move to Shanghai and the new-to-China Costa Mediterranea will sail from Shenzhen as well as other South China homeports.
“Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenzhen have the long-term opportunity,” Zanetti told Cruise Industry News. “But we wouldn’t be forgetting the fact we are working and cooperating with the secondary homeports as well. These are also growing and represent a valid alternative.” "
Regent Claims New Record for Most Bookings in a Single Day
"Regent Seven Seas Cruises has said it achieved the largest booking day in the cruise line’s 28-year history with the launch of its 2022-2023 Voyage Collection when sales opened on October 21, 2020, according to a press release. Citing strong pent-up demand for cruising, reservations surpassed Regent’s previous booking day record, set in April 2018 with the launch of Seven Seas Splendor’s inaugural season, by nearly 40 percent, the company said."

Del Rio: At Least 60 Days to Get a Cruise Ship Ready
"It will take at least 60 days to get a Norwegian Cruise Line ship ready to sail, according to Frank Del Rio, president and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), speaking on a Tuesday morning panel discussion. "It takes time to stand up a ship," Del Rio said, adding that company vessels have been laid up for six months. Of note, NCLH on Monday cancelled all of its November sailings… "It is not turning on a light switch," he added, noting crew would need to be brought back to the ship, and numerous new onboard technologies would need to be installed."
New Antimicrobial Film Reportedly Kills COVID-19 Germs
"Southern Barcode has come up with an idea for a product that reportedly kills COVID-19 germs and prevents its cross-contamination on various surfaces. The antimicrobial film is offered as a bespoke product to the retail and hospitality sectors. The product can be used on door handles, door push plates, tabletops, or any other surfaces that are touched by different people. In the cruise industry, the company hopes to sell the product to Virgin, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines Southern Barcode has worked with in the past, said the company’s CEO, Simon Vinall. The film works as an adhesive that can be attached to any surface, and when a person who has COVID-19 touches it – even if their hands carry the germs – the silver nitrate that’s in the film will reportedly kill it straight away. “[With this product], you can effectively sanitize an area without having to constantly deploy people to spray and wipe,” Vinall said. “It’s almost an automatic process. The silver nitrate that’s in the film automatically kills any bacteria, so it’s continually sanitizing itself as opposed to having to rely on somebody sanitizing it as part of their process. And between the sanitations, you might have 20 people touch that door who may or may not have washed their hands – it takes that all away.” One film lasts for six months unless damaged, Vinall added."
Virgin Voyages Pushes Start to January 2021
"Virgin Voyages has pushed back its debut into revenue service with the Scarlet Lady to January, according to a letter sent to guests and travel agents. The line was ready to start service earlier this year with its new 2,770-passenger ship at the start of March, but postponed cruises due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ship sailed to Miami following a delivery in Italy and preview voyages in the UK. It has since relocated to Europe to bring crew home, where it remains."
